We are constantly surrounded by distractions, instant gratification and stimulation. Never wanting our minds to rest and have nothing to focus on. Boredom has become foreign to us, almost like a plague, we can't allow ourselves to go near it.
In the world we live in today it is nothing like it used to be where boredom was as common as a cold. Growing up we experience it almost daily, having to find creative ways to entertain ourselves and become playful, that is not in existence today. Today we have any and everything to keep our minds busy, tv, phones, social media and many others.
When we experience a spell of boredom, we become lost and depressed, not knowing what to do with ourselves. We have outgrown the days of sitting with nothing to do but to let our mind wonder and our eyes drift around us.
For me, I love being bored, it gives my mind so much space to reflect, to imagine and get creative. We need boredom to fully immerse ourselves in our emotions and thoughts in order to process them, heal them and let them go.
When we have all these distractions, we never allow ourselves to just sit with our thoughts and emotions, we instead choose to push them aside and not take the time necessary to deal with them. In return for the neglect on ourselves mentally and emotionally, we are risking our health and wellbeing. We are not giving ourselves the chance or the space to work through things properly, we just turn the tv on or scroll through social media to distract.
There becomes a lot of numbness in doing this constantly, giving ourselves steady stimulation. When we do not allow ourselves to feel bored, we can't not only work through things but we diminish our ability to be creative. When we have time to be bored, we are able to tap into our creative side, to find things to fill that time that are rewarding and fulfilling, such as writing, drawing, crafting, reading and many others.
Choosing to distract with things that really give no meaning or improvement to our lives, we are letting valuable time pass us by that could be used to serve our soul in a better way, to give us meaning and joy in our daily lives.
Often when someone is dealing with anxiety or depression, they tend to think that boredom is the enemy, it is space and time for all the negative to rise and dig our hole deeper. No, boredom in these times are our shovel, our latter, our means of escape. During these times, we fill our time with distractions and we numb ourselves to our emotions causing them to become louder and uglier.
If we face our boredom with a positive outlook, as a chance to change things for the better, to create space for us to heal and work through things, allow our creative minds to flow, we can slowly improve our lives. By fully immersing ourselves in the state of boredom, welcoming it and having excitement when it comes to visit, we can turn this into such a positive experience and turn our lives around.
It takes time to get to this point and it will be a struggle to deny ourselves the distraction, to not turn on the tv or open our phones to social media and blindly scroll. Some days will be harder than others but with time and dedication to the purpose of boredom, knowing it can give space for many great things, you too can learn to love and enjoy those moments that arise.
Remember, we are just human beings with a powerful soul that longs to be in a state of just being, we are not meant to be constantly distracted and be numb with our actions, we are meant to be more, to experience more, to expand our existence with doing things that bring us true joy and gratification, not temporary, meaningless things that the world offers.
I hope the next time you start to feel bored, want to turn the tv on, or pick up your phone, you stop for a minute and think to yourself, is this truly rewarding, will this feed my soul, will this make me feel fulfilled and proud in this moment, if not, put it down, sit and think, find ways to spend that time and fully embrace boredom and all the good it can do. With all my love and light.
